Blog2:Cultural Globalization——LIU YINGTONG

1. Summary

In John Tomlinson’s article Cultural Globalization, the author discusses the relationship between culture and globalization. He explains that globalization is not only about the economy and technology. It also includes culture, media, and connections between people. With the development of the Internet and social media, people can learn about other cultures more easily.

The author also argues that globalization does not mean that all cultures in the world will become the same. People in different countries may watch the same movies, listen to the same music, and use the same brands. However, they understand and use these cultural products in different ways because of their own cultures and experiences. Therefore, globalization influences culture, but culture also influences globalization.

Another important idea in the article is “deterritorialization.” It means that culture is becoming less limited by geographical location. For example, we can watch foreign movies, listen to music from other countries, and learn about different lifestyles through the Internet. However, this does not mean that local cultures will disappear. Different places can still keep their own cultural characteristics.

2. What I Learned

After reading this article, I learned that globalization does not necessarily make the cultures of all countries the same. Before reading it, I mainly thought about globalization as the spread of foreign culture into another country. For example, Korean popular culture has become more popular in China. However, I now understand that people do not simply accept foreign culture. They choose and understand it based on their own interests and cultural backgrounds.

As a media student, I think social media is a good example. Through Xiaohongshu, Instagram, and TikTok, we can learn about fashion, beauty, music, and lifestyles from different countries. Some trends become popular in many places, but people may copy or change them in their own ways. Therefore, globalization brings cultures closer together and also gives people new ways to express themselves.

3. Questions for Discussion

My question is: Do global trends on social media make local cultures disappear, or do they help local cultures develop in new ways?

I think both things can happen. Global trends may influence people's shopping habits and ideas about beauty and fashion. At the same time, people can use social media to introduce their traditional cultures and help more people from other countries understand them. In my opinion, it depends on how people use these platforms and whether they continue to protect and share their own cultures.
