Blog 2: Cultural Globalization -XUXINRAN

1. Summary

In the reading Cultural Globalization, John Tomlinson explains how globalization connects people and cultures around the world. Globalization is not only about money and business. It also includes food, music, fashion, technology, media, and ideas. Today, people can learn about other countries more easily through the Internet, movies, TV shows, and social media.

However, the author explains that globalization does not mean every country will have the same culture. People do not always accept foreign culture in the same way. They may change it to fit their own habits and lifestyles. Also, even when people enjoy foreign products and entertainment, their local cultures do not necessarily disappear.

Another important point in the reading is the influence of media. Information can travel very quickly, and people can learn about places without visiting them. However, receiving information quickly does not mean that people truly understand it. The author also discusses cultural identity and the relationship between different cultures. People should be able to keep their own cultural identities while learning about other cultures. In general, globalization creates more connections between people, but it does not remove all cultural differences.

2. What I Learned

One idea that interested me was that foreign cultures can change when they enter another country. I have experienced this through food. When I lived in China, I also enjoyed Korean food. However, I felt that many Korean restaurants in China had very similar flavors, almost as if they used the same seasoning. Some Korean dishes were also changed into more creative dishes and became a kind of “pretty food” that people enjoy taking pictures of.

After I came to Korea, I tried Korean food here and found that the taste was quite different from what I had eaten in China. The food felt more traditional and classic to me. This experience made me think that the same type of food can become different in different places. When foreign food enters a new country, people may change its taste or presentation to fit local preferences. I do not think this means the original culture disappears. Instead, it shows how cultures can influence each other and develop in different ways.

I also started to think more about cultural globalization through Thai entertainment. Before I became interested in Thai artists, I did not know much about Thai culture. My impression was mainly related to Buddhism and the beautiful beaches in Phuket. Later, through Thai artists, TV shows, and other entertainment, I became interested in learning more about Thailand. Entertainment gave me a reason to look beyond my first impression and discover things I had not known before. I think this is one positive effect of globalization. It gives people more chances to become curious about other cultures.

At the same time, I think social media can also create misunderstandings. I often see videos about a small number of Chinese tourists behaving badly in other countries, such as smoking in places where they should not or spitting in public. These behaviors are not good, but I do not think it is fair to use them to judge all Chinese tourists. A few people’s actions cannot represent an entire country.

This connects to another idea in the reading: fast communication does not always lead to real understanding. People often see short videos or read a few comments and quickly form an opinion. They may not know the full story, but the information can still influence how they see a country. I think we need to be more careful when we receive information online.

3. Questions and Discussion

One question I have after reading this article is: How much do we need to know about a culture before we can say that we understand it?

I think different people have different ideas about what it means to understand a culture. Some people may feel that watching a few videos and learning some basic information is enough for them. Others may want to study its history, traditions, and daily life in detail. I do not think there is one simple answer, because it is difficult to decide how much information or time is enough.

For me, truly understanding a culture takes a lot of time and effort. Even though I have lived in China for most of my life, I cannot say that I completely understand every part of Chinese culture. There are still many things I do not know. So, when people learn about another country through a few short videos, I think they should remember that their understanding is only a small part of a much bigger picture.

I also wonder whether globalization may cause people to pay less attention to their own cultures. Globalization gives us more opportunities to enjoy different foods, music, movies, and traditions. I think this is valuable because it helps us see the world from different perspectives. Different cultures can learn from one another, and each culture may have something special to share. However, I also worry that people may become more interested in popular foreign cultures and forget to learn about their own traditions. Less popular cultures may receive less attention and have fewer opportunities to develop.

In my opinion, globalization has both advantages and disadvantages. We should not reject foreign cultures, but we should not accept everything without thinking either. We can learn from other cultures while keeping an interest in our own. We should also avoid judging a whole country based on a few people or a small amount of information. For me, the important thing is to look at globalization in a reasonable way: learn from what is good, think carefully about what may be harmful, and respect the differences between cultures.

Comments

  1. I really relate to your experience with Korean food in China. I have also noticed that the same type of food can taste quite different depending on where you eat it. I think this is an interesting example of how foreign cultures adapt to local tastes and preferences. I agree that globalization can make us more interested in other cultures, but our understanding of them may still be limited. I also think your point about social media is important because a few videos cannot represent an entire country.
