Blog1: What Is Globalization?- ZHANG JINGYANG

 Part 1: What Is Globalization?

When I first heard the word "globalization," I thought it was just about big companies selling products in other countries. But after thinking about it more, I realized it is much bigger than that. Globalization is the way the world has become more connected. It touches almost every part of our lives, from the food we eat to the music we listen to, and even the jobs we do.

Economically, globalization means that money, goods, and services move across borders more easily than ever before. A company in one country can make products in another, sell them in a third, and have customers all over the world. This creates jobs and cheaper products, but it can also hurt local businesses that cannot compete. Politically, countries work together through organizations like the United Nations or the World Trade Organization. They make rules about trade, human rights, and environmental protection. This cooperation can help solve global problems, but it can also be difficult because countries have different interests.

Culturally, globalization is about the spread of ideas, values, and ways of life. Hollywood movies, K-pop, and sushi are enjoyed far from their original homes. The internet lets us talk to people on the other side of the planet instantly. But this also raises questions: Are we all becoming the same? Or do we hold on to our own traditions even more strongly? So, globalization is not just one thing. It is a mix of economic, political, and cultural connections that shape how we live today.

Part 2: What I Found Most Interesting

What I find most interesting about globalization is that it does not simply make the world uniform. Many people fear that globalization will erase local cultures, and everything will look like an American shopping mall. But in reality, something more complex happens. When global products or ideas arrive in a new place, they often get changed to fit the local culture. For example, a fast-food chain might offer a rice dish in Asia or a spicy burger in Mexico. This shows that local people are not just passive receivers; they actively adapt and reshape what comes from outside. This mixing creates new, hybrid cultures that are neither purely global nor purely local.

Another interesting point is the reaction against globalization. As the world becomes more connected, some people feel threatened. They worry about losing their language, traditions, or way of life. This can lead to a rise in nationalism or a desire to close borders. Ironically, the more global we become, the more some people want to be local. This tension between openness and protection is happening all over the world. It makes me think that globalization is not a smooth process; it is full of contradictions. It brings people together but also creates new divisions. It offers opportunities but also creates new anxieties.

Part 3: Question and Discussion

If I could ask my classmates one question, it would be this: Can we enjoy the benefits of globalization without losing what makes our own cultures special?

On one hand, globalization gives us access to amazing things from other countries: new foods, new ideas, new ways of solving problems. It can help us understand people who are different from us. On the other hand, it can feel like a powerful force that we cannot control. Big corporations and global markets often have more power than local communities. Small businesses close, local languages disappear, and traditional ways of life fade. So, is it possible to be open to the world while still protecting our own roots?

I think this is a question we all need to think about, not just politicians or business leaders. Every time we choose what to buy, what to watch, or what language to speak, we are making a choice about globalization. Maybe the answer is not to stop globalization, but to shape it in a way that respects both global connections and local identities. I would like to hear what others think. Do you feel more connected to the world, or more worried about losing your own culture? And how can we find a balance?
